In addition to supporting women throughout pregnancy, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine offers wonderful support for postpartum moms.

Mother and ChildIn Chinese Medicine, we have a specific treatment for helping new moms recover from birth called Mother Warming. (also known as Mother Roasting).

Mother Warming is a nourishing treatment for new moms that combines acupuncture and moxibustion.

The reason this treatment is called Mother Warming is because of the moxibustion. We apply the moxibustion to the entire belly area (and sometimes the lower back) to warm up the body. The moxibustion strengthens the body and boost energy. We combine this with acupuncture to re-balance the body and facilitate healing.

Women report feeling really good after this treatment.

Mother Warming can be done at any time starting at 5-7 days postpartum. Even for patients that come in months after giving birth, they often can benefit from this treatment.

Mother Warming is appropriate for general postpartum healing and supports overall health and wellness. In addition, we can use acupuncture, moxibustion, and Chinese herbal medicine (when appropriate) to address any postpartum health issues that may come up.

Some of the health issues that we can address with Chinese medicine include:

  • Breastfeeding support- for optimizing lactation and treating lactation issues
  • Mood support- for low mood, depression, and anxiety
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Musculoskeletal pain- neck pain, back pain, arm pain, etc.
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Constipation and digestive issues

The acupuncture treatments offer a much-needed time for moms to get their own care and nourishment. Many new moms fall deep into sleep with the treatments and report feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

When hormones shift and the menstrual cycle resumes, some women can initially experience intense PMS, heavy bleeding, and painful periods. Acupuncture can help balance the hormones and ease the cycles so that the cycles can normalize.
